WOMEN IN ACADEMIA

PART 3 / STEP BY STEP

p3.PNG

As a recently qualified architect, I understand the challenges of the Part 3 course as well as how difficult it can be to juggle university and work at the same time. If there is anything the Part 3 course taught me was that there are so many ways we can get sued!

I have completed the Part 3 course at The University of Huddersfield with a Distinction and qualified as an Architect early this year. It has been a complex, difficult and emotionally challenging year, but I have learned and developed significant professional and personal skills which I believe modeled my thinking and practice.

Part 3 is the last step in an architect's education in the UK and it is an important time to assess your position within the architectural field and exercise your judgement and your manner of responding to technical and complex business and contractual scenarios. Nonetheless, the critical aspect of it all is to develop a reflective and critical thinking which are much needed skills in your future architectural career.

So why don't you join me in trying to make what might seem as the hardest thing you'll ever do something tolerable and enjoyable. You'll be surprised how interesting it actually is!

Module 1 / Career Appraisal

This Module will take you through the 5 sections you will need to include in your Career Appraisal framework:

1. Reflection on your Undergraduate studies (Part 1)

2. Stage 1 working experience

3. Reflection on the MArch studies (Part 2)

4. Stage 2 working experience

5. The Future and your aspirations

Module 2 / Professional CV

The professional curriculum vitae is an important part of your documentary submission as it gives examiners a complete insight into your career to date. It should inform them of your education and work experience as well as any other related interests you might have. An important aspect is to ensure these facts are shown clearly, in a chronological sequence howing your achievements.

Module 3 / PEDRs & Fenwick Diagram

1. PEDRs!

The forms everybody hates... students, mentors, advisors and examiners. They are a pain but an absolutely necessary pain as they are the only place where you can demonstrate your up-to-date experience, the RIBA Work Stages you have been involved with, and how you have developed skills and critical thinking in the context of the Part 3 Criteria.

2. Fenwick Diagram

Another requirement at many universities at the moment is the Fenwick Diagram. Whilst complex and time-consuming to produce, the Fenwick Diagram will become one of the most useful parts of your documentary submission. In this session we will go through examples of diagrams and how you can best organise your logs in order to produce one.

Module 4 / Case Study

This Module will look at how you can best demonstrate your knowledge and understanding of the professional, procurement, regulatory and management issues of the Part 3 Criteria.  Whilst this might seem as a long, tiring process of written documentation of your practice, don't feel intimidated by it. Remember, you are writing about something you did!

The aim of this module is to discuss the structure of a case study that will take the examiners through a clear, comprehensive analytical journey through your work. We will also look at what types of diagrams and graphs would be useful to include within the case study to support your writing.

Module 5 / Written Examination

This Module will aim to explain the written examinations in detail, give some useful and practical advice on how to prepare for them and show a variety of approaches to answering questions. We will also discuss how the examination days might be managed by yourself as Part 3 candidates and how to develop an examination technique for answering questions in a limited amount of time.

We will look at specific questions and engage in discussion about model answers and good mindsets for examinations.

Module 6 / Oral Examination

Last, but not least - the oral examination (or viva). This is, without doubt, one of the most important parts of your Part 3 examination and the key to its success is practice! During this Module, we will go through potential viva formats, common questions and formulating answers techniques.

Module 6 / Books and other useful references

This Module will aim to present the books I found most useful in my journey as a Part 3 candidate as well as various links to presentations, articles and useful references you might need during this journey.

The Modules will be done online. Please register by sending us a message below.
